This study documents the cultural destruction inflicted on the Gaza Strip during the 2023 war, considering it a central dimension of contemporary genocidal wars that target both human lives and cultural identity. The research aims to analyze the forms of damage affecting tangible and intangible cultural heritage, including archaeological sites, places of worship, cultural institutions, libraries, and archives. The study adopts a descriptive analytical methodology, drawing on reports by international organizations, statements from Palestinian cultural institutions, and expert technical assessments by heritage specialists. It also examines the international legal framework for the protection of cultural property during armed conflicts—particularly the 1954 Hague Convention and assesses the extent of compliance with it in the context of the 2023 war on Gaza. The study concludes that cultural destruction in the Gaza Strip was extensive and systematic, posing a direct threat to Palestinian cultural identity and collective memory, and constituting an intentional and serious erasure of both tangible and intangible heritage. It therefore calls for strengthening mechanisms of documentation and international accountability.
